More Than a Garden Gate... Discover How to Paint Trees, Foliage with Confidence
There’s something irresistible about an old garden gate. It invites you to wonder what might be waiting on the other side. Add a winding path, a magnificent old tree, and sunlight filtering through layers of foliage, and suddenly you have the ingredients for a painting filled with warmth, mystery, and atmosphere. That’s exactly what we’ll be painting together during our new two-day Watercolor Mastery Workshop, “Garden Gate,” on August 22nd & 23rd.
But this workshop is about much more than painting a beautiful garden gate.
Trees and foliage are everywhere in the landscape, and learning how to paint them well can open up an entirely new world of subjects for the watercolor artist. During these two days, we’re going to spend a great deal of time exploring different ways to approach them - from the massive character-filled tree that dominates our painting to the soft layers of foliage, branches, leaves, shadows, and light that surround it.
And there isn’t just one way to paint a tree.
That’s part of what makes this workshop so much fun.
I’ll show you several different approaches and techniques for creating trees and foliage in watercolor. We’ll explore loose, expressive brush-work as well as more controlled techniques, soft wet-into-wet shapes alongside crisp edges, positive and negative painting, dry brush, variegated washes, and ways of suggesting enormous amounts of detail without actually painting every leaf.
You’ll also discover how light can completely transform a landscape. We’ll use value, color temperature, edges, and carefully placed areas of light to create depth and lead the viewer through the painting - from the sunlit path and garden gate into the foliage and that wonderful old tree.
