There is something about an old tractor resting in a sunlit field that brings back memories of a simpler time. The faded paint, weathered barn, overgrown grass, and warm afternoon light all tell a story - and together, they give us a wonderful subject for watercolor.
In this workshop, I’ll show you how to simplify a scene like this into strong, paintable shapes while still capturing the character that makes it special. We’ll use value, color, edges, and texture to create rusted metal, sunlit grasses, weathered wood, and the soft foliage surrounding the farm.
You’ll also learn how to make the tractor the focal point without overworking it, create depth between the foreground, middle-ground, and background, and suggest plenty of detail without painting every little thing. The goal is more than simply painting an old farm - it’s learning how to turn an ordinary scene into a watercolor filled with warmth, atmosphere, and memory.
I’ll show you several different approaches and techniques for creating trees, foliage and grass in watercolor. We’ll explore loose, expressive brush-work, as well as more controlled techniques, soft wet-into-wet shapes alongside crisp edges, positive and negative painting, dry brush, variegated washes, and ways of suggesting enormous amounts of detail without actually painting every leaf or blade of grass.
You’ll also discover how light can completely transform a landscape. We’ll use value, color temperature, edges, and carefully placed areas of light to create depth and lead the viewer through the painting.
